How to get a California guard card in 6 steps

  1. 1

Confirm that you meet the basic requirements

You must be at least 18. Be ready to provide truthful application information and undergo California DOJ and FBI criminal-history checks.

  2. 2

Complete the full 8-hour course with one provider

Complete 3 hours of Power to Arrest and 5 hours of Appropriate Use of Force with the same qualifying provider. Finish it within the six months before you submit the application.

Do not split the course. A Power to Arrest certificate from one seller and an Appropriate Use of Force certificate from another does not satisfy the 2026 single-provider rule.
  3. 3

    Pass the provider-administered course examination

The required exam belongs to the approved training course. Guard Card Guide provides independent preparation, not the official exam or training certificate.

  4. 4

Submit and pay for the BSIS application

Apply through official BreEZe or the current paper form. The initial BSIS fee is $60. Save the submitted application and payment confirmation before moving to fingerprints.

  5. 5

    After submission, complete Live Scan

Use the current BSIS Security Guard Request for Live Scan Service form, make sure your identity details match, and keep the ATI number. Paper applicants must follow the payment-timing instructions before fingerprinting.

Track approval, documents, and follow-up training

Check the official license search. After issuance, keep the required hardcopy registration evidence and photo ID for work while the physical card is pending, then complete the required follow-up training on time.
