What a guard card does not do
The guard card is not a concealed-carry permit and is not permission to carry any weapon anywhere. BSIS states that an exposed firearm may be carried only under the firearms permit, only for the qualifying work, and only in the caliber or calibers listed on the permit.
Do not buy the wrong course
If a job advertisement says “armed guard,” ask which current BSIS permits are required before paying a school. The free California guard-card practice test on this website covers the security guard training concepts; it is not a firearms-permit course and does not replace the separate assessment, classroom or range requirements.
Employer rules still matter.A permit does not force an employer to authorize a weapon. The employer, post orders, insurance requirements and other laws can be more restrictive.
