What happens after you apply
Fingerprints and application are received
BSIS must receive the required application and background-check information. Incorrect forms or missing information can create a deficiency.
DOJ and FBI responses are reviewed
Processing can take longer when the Bureau is waiting for criminal-history responses or must make additional determinations.
Approval appears in the state license search
Once issued, the registration can be verified online. Save or print the approval record.
The hard card arrives by mail
The BSIS fact sheet says registrants should receive the card approximately three weeks after issuance.
Can you work while waiting for the physical card?
Not merely because the application was submitted. After the Bureau approves and issues the registration, California law allows a security guard to work pending the hard-copy card while carrying a hardcopy printout of the Bureau’s approval and valid picture identification.
Common reasons an application takes longer
- Incomplete or incorrect application information
- Using an outdated form for a paper application
- Using the wrong Live Scan form or missing fingerprint information
- Background-check responses that require additional review
- Application deficiencies that require the applicant to respond
